I'd like to be able to edit the same file back and forth between either OS. I have a PC desktop and I want to get a MacBook Pro. Will I beable to do Photoshop work on the same files with both systems?

Yes they are both compatible. You should have no problem opening it on a mac, if the file name does not say .psd at the end, the mac may have trouble recognizing this, but you can always add it to the file name. Or try right-clicking on the file and choosing the ''open with'' menu; Then choose to open it with Photoshop cs (you can also drag the file onto the phtoshop logo on the menu bar). But again, you should have no problem going back and forth with your pc and mac photoshop files.

yes, as long as you have the same version of photoshop running on each machine. if one has an older version you can save it as the older version on the newer software. make sure you include the extension when saving the file on the mac.

1) Flatten the image.

2) Export the file as a gif. One of the steps to do this is to use the eye dropper to select the background color.

I used to work with ps elements 2, but it doesn't work with leopard so I'm thinking about getting this. I use photoshop for color correction, exposure editing (like work with the histogram) sharpening, and cloning mostly, but I'll also use other tools. But lloking at ps elements 4 it looks like a dumbed down version of elements 2.0 like the current version of iphoto. Is this true? Is it the same phhotoshop I've always loved? Same editing interface? Anything I can't do on it? Any other options I have that's not a ridiculous price?

Photoshop Elements 4 is great---there are more recent versions of Photoshop elements, though; PS 4 is a few years old. You can do pretty much anything with PS 4; I certainly recommend it, but, like I said, there are more recent versions of Photoshop Elements out there.

As far as the editing interface, I haven't an earlier version to compare it to, although I can tell you that it is one main screen, with tools on the left and effects on the right. There is also a main panel at the top with all of the options in condensed form.

Photoshop is the best, and they have a lite version for much cheaper, can't remember exactly what it's called. Possibly Photoshop Elements?
I am not, in any way recommending illicit downloading of software, but I would point out that it is possible to get Photoshop through Torrent sites for people that are so inclined to do so.

I agree with the JASC Paintshop pro recommendations. It's cheap, effective and, I think, more flexible than Abobe Photoshop (but then I don't like Adobe software at all). Also, it doesn't use up half you PC's memory when it loads, like Photoshop does.

open a pic in photoshop, go to image, adjust color and make it whatever color you want -or use any other color options under the image category-play around its cool what you can do!. when done save as. open the same original pic and do the same thing but change it to a different color. When you have done all four. open them all along with a 8.5x11 page. select them one at a time with the marquee tool and copy and paste them onto the new page in the pop art format. You can do almost anything you want with Photoshop. I don't know anything about Gimp. If you are trying to turn a colored pic into b%26w. Simply go to Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Channel Mixer(click on monocromatic) or Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Hue/Saturation and just turn the saturation down or open your Channels window and copy paste the Red,Green, and Blue channels into new corresponding layers.

To replace the color to red or blue you could go to Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Replace Color. Then you just click on the color you want to change and pic a new one. It will replace it for you. You could use the color replacement tool under the brushes. You just paint over the old color with a new color of your choice. Also depending on what you want you could go to Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Gradient Map. If you want to tint the color of the whole image at once Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Photo Filter. Also to get more control you could Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Variations.

Actually it is a better plan to shoot all your images with out any manipulation and then later using a photo program make any changes you want ... always saving the modified image as another name so you don't destroy the original file.

This is very difficult. Try the pencil tool and draw with it. Using a mouse to get a smooth curve is also difficult. Much easier if you have a tablet. Unfornuately, there is no way to smooth the curve once drawn.

You didn't say what file format your animation is in... If you used Image Ready, you can try exporting your animation as an animated gif. It will be saved with a .gif extension, but may not display the entire animation when you upload it.

To my knowledge, Photoshop does not create animations.

I'll just say this. If you don't have the disc that initially installs photoshop onto a computer, then you deffinitely can't. And also, you probably would need a security code from the box you bought it from. So it's a slim to none chance. If you had the disc then maybe.

Oh, and replying to the person above me. That's not completely true. On some programs the serial number can be used more than once on a different computer. I've done it plenty of times.

You should also consider whether the copy on your family's laptop is legal or not.

oh my goodness jeez. this is frustrating me SO MUCH! Ok, so I'm trying to outline a picture in Photoshop, using the pen tool. I get my anchor set and try to ''Stroke Path,'' but when I right-click, ''Stroke Path'' is gray, so I can't click on it. How can I fix this?!

If I'm understanding you correctly, you have to ''stroke path'' first.

With the pen tool selected, go to ''Windows'' and click options if the options box isn't checked already. In the options panel, three buttons from the far left, you should see a pen tip surronded by a box. When you mouse over it, it should say ''paths.'' That's what you're looking for, I hope. If my directions doesn't make sense, just let me know and I'll try and rephrase it, because it's kinda confusing me...

are you on the correct layer? if you have multiple layers and you're not on the correct one most of the tools won't work. very common mistake.
Because strokes only work on images, not on paths or the selections you make out of a path.

If you are using Photoshop CS1 or newer, I suggest you use the stroke blending effect from the layers window, just right click a layer and choose Blending Effects and pick stroke and customize. Unlike the classic stroke, this one isn't permenate and can be edited in the future.

As far as your problem, perhaps you need to make your selection from your path by going to the paths window, right click and choose ''Make Selection''. Then go to Selection %26gt; Modify %26gt; Border and choose a value and fill it.

Photoshop 6 is pretty old, it may be hard to find the brushes for it. You can try download.com or adobe.com or ask.com, just type in photoshop 6 brushes.

It depends on what sort of outline you opt for, but one way is :

1) cut out the part that needs the outline (using the selection tools)

2) paste this (it creates a new layer)

3) select the layer and click the small effects button (circle with a ''f'' at the bottom of the layer pallette) and choose ''outer glow''

4) adjust the settings until you get the desired effect.

Inner glow might work too. Other than that, it's possible to use the pen tool to draw the outline and fill the outline with a colour. More complicated and time-consuming, though, so I would try using the layer effects first.

Another way is copying the object to a new layer below the original object, select that layer' content (%26lt;CTRL%26gt;-click on the layer) and choose Select, Modify, Expand. Expand the selection (trial %26 error, because it depends on the resolution you're working in) and fill the whole selection with a different colour. This creates an outline as well.

For Black %26 White effect, following menu option should help,

Image-%26gt;Mode-%26gt;Greyscale...

For cutting a picture %26 putting it onto other, Use Pen Tool from tool box, cut the picture, Drag it using, Drag Tool, onto other picture.

To form a film strip, create a New image with required width %26 height, then start dragging the pictures which want to add as film strip into that new image.

Hope these are of use...and hopefully u'll come across lot many online tutorials as Photoshop is widely used for photo mixing %26 designing.

you can also work your file half the size your working it (50%) but save it with double resolution, that way when you want to open it again, you double it size (to the original one), but with a good resolution.. :)

Photoshop files are very memory hungry -You can collapse the file - It takes up a lot more memory when you have lots of layers open.

Do merge visible. Go through all your files and make some more space this way . Delete any you dont need and defrag your computer.
The first responder has, probably describe your situation, exactly. The more layers your image has, the larger the file size. In fact, each layer multiplies the original file size. If your background layer is 20 meg, a new layer will add another 20 megs. A third will and an addtional 20 megs, and so on.

ya u can do it... jus press Alt+i+i... ull get the image size change the resolution.. u have told that u were doing that before now ur not able to do it... in photoshop 7... even faced the same problem in levels... and curve option... the plugin was damaged... so i reinstalled the photoshop... i think its plugin problem.. the problem arises if u work on 500 mb file at once in photoshop... the plugin gets corrupted... so try to reinstall photoshop

It almost looks like it was hand-drawn.

You can use an existing font that's kinda close, and make the text ''rendered'' and then just paint %26/or erase. Fill, pink, stroke black add some dots %26 scribbles and you're good to go.

OR - handdraw what you'd like, and then scan it and fill it as shown in the pic.

Well this is my favourite one. You're not as much in profile, but you are looking at the camera, which is better.

Got rid of the light overhead, made the skin glow, but lost the flash glare, smoothed the nose and the jaw line, brightened the eyes but enlarged and darkened the pupils, darkened the lips but added a bit more refinement to the upper lip.

But it is the case of less is more. I like to keep it looking real and not plasticy.

that all depends on where you got it from. there are a lot of cracked versions floating around on the internet that all work well.

To be viewed by all browsers, a graphic has to be in either the .jpg or .gif format. Almost any graphics program can save in this format.

I would have to say that you are better off going with Photoshop. Firstly because the student version is much less than the retail version, and it's worth buying it while you can get that discount.

Secondly, Elements is about %20 the program of full blown Photoshop. It has %20 the options, abilities, and if that is all you learn on, you will be stuck with %20 of the skills.

You need to take advantage of being is school to learn as much as you can about the FULL version of Photoshop, if you ever plan on putting it on your resume. Mostly because it is a program that is re-released about once every one and a half to two years, and if you aren't familiar with the program as a whole, learning the new items can be much harder. And jobs will expect you to be able to keep up with all of the new abilities.

Buy photoshop and install in your computer. You will get photoshop teaching books and learn it easly. there are many short keys to make it easier. I shall send the short key chart to you by request to sajipalluruthy@yahoo.com. But practice is the only way to make it more easier.
Open the image in photoshop. Select the ''T'' text tool on the bottom left. Click on the left colour square and select the colour you want. Up on the top left, select your font and your font size.

Click on your image where you want the writing to go,and type away.

You can also resize it via edit then transform, then scale.

You can emboss it or add a drop shadow by going to layer, then layer style.

When you save it, you should save it as a jpg unless you are going to want to fiddle with it more later. It will try to save as a psd. but they are huge files, especially if you are emailing them.

Um, yeah...what you've done in Photoshop is create the images you'll use, but to actually put it together as a web page that's intereactive, you've got to code it up in HTML. HTML isn't really a programming language, it's a page markup language with some interactive features. You'll also need to learn some kind of scripting -- java, vb, etc. -- to be up to par with today's web pages.

While HTML isn't hard, you do need to actually *learn* it. I'd suggest you do two things:

-- first, google or yahoo search ''html tutorial'', you will find literally hundreds of free web-based tutorials that will give you the basics of HTML.

-- second, go buy a good book on HTML. An investment of $25 will pay off very handsomely.

I run Adobe Photoshop 7.0. I've had it for a few years and have never had this problem until today. When I try to make an image, like by using a brush, it looks pixely and rough at any zoom. A great amount of detail is lost and there is no smoothness to the image. The image looks the same once it's been saved and viewed outside PS.

As for Photoshop, Elements 5 (PC) or Elements 4 (Mac) are the latest versions. I teach both. But there are limits to what they will do when compared to CS(original), CS2, or the new CS3).

The limits in Elements that might hold you back are things like a lack of Quick Mask, and the fact that they try to force you to use this or that ''auto'' setting - which I promise you are almost always wrong!

The basics to good photo image management are the same at all levels. (I've simplified them as much as possible on my web tutorial at www.jimsdigitaldiary.com.)

One alternative might be to see if you can find - and buy - a legal version of Photoshop CS or CS2 (now that CS3 has hit the street). You'd pay a lot less and get enough ''pro level'' features to keep you working creatively for a long time.

I do all of my creative work in CS. I may upgrade to CS3 after the new Mac OS comes out in October. But, for now, I find CS to be very satisfactory.

I would suggest you start out with the simple selection tool, which is the lasso tool, select your eyess by drawing a circle around them, after you see the ''marching ants'' around both of you eyes, (hold shift when starting 2nd eye so that you can keep the first eye selected ) press control+u or Command+u on macs and the hue and saturation window will come up, change the hue and mess around with the sliders

1.you have to select your hair using one of the lasso tools,

2. desaturate the area (make B%26W),

3. then create a new layer,

4. on that layer with the hair selected, paint the hair the color you want,

Comics use mostly a line drawing and a layered gradient behind the black line work. You can do that in Photoshop yes. Make a new image, always use 300dpi resolution if you plan on printing it. So 8x10 inches at 300 should be a good sized canvas. Use your layers, make each shape in a new layer. You can draw and scan your work in or draw it digitally. Use the line trace and make a shape on a new layer, set your 2 colours in the palette and use the gradient tool to fill in the area.

They don't have to be the perfect shape, you can go in with the eraser later and clean it up. But the trick to illustration is to keep the different elements on separate layers. You can use layering F/X as well for more variety. The blending of the layers style, it's properties are attached to the layers window.

Illustrator is best suited for illustrating elements, so if you have the ability to draw (or even trace) an element that is one option to use in your poster.

You could also use Illustrator to create a logo whether it be an object or text. You can create some interesting text in Illustrator that can't necessarily be duplicated in Photoshop. Logo's are generally done in Illustrator or at least started in the program as the vector graphics are completely scalable, thus suitable for print. So creating a Iogo of some kind may be another option for you to consider.

If you are sending your large format work to a service provider, DO NOT lower your resolution to compress the file! You need all the resolution you can get for press. Save it as PDF, and use the ''Press Quality'' setting.

use a pdf print driver (listed below) this will allow you to print it but instead of printing the file you will save it as a pdf that will be (hopefully) small enough to e-mail. plus you can print anything as a pdf with this. (essentially the same thing you can do with acrobat but free)
Find some program to change the resolution to under 100. I suggest photoshop.
When you click SAVE AS in Photoshop, select PDF.

You have played with the preferences.

Go to Edit, then preferences, look for the brushes and change ''other brushes'' back to standard instead of cross hair.

Problem with Photoshop CS canvas size??

When I want to make a new project in Photoshop I will click new and then it asks me for the measurments of the page. So say if I enter 10cm for the Width and 30cm for the height it then loads the page and its a completley different measurment than what I put in and also wen i click save now its also not what i put in. How do i resolve this annoying problem?

The image will appear bigger in photoshop when the resolution is higher.

So, check the resolution after entering the measurements, its normally 72 px perinch

Always follow the measurements in your computer instead of what you see on your screen . CTRL+R to view rulers on your new document/ page.

When you start a new project, these are the settings you'll get:

Width: (set this to 30, make sure ''cm'' is selected in the drop down box)

Height: (set this to 10, make sure ''cm'' is selected in the drop down box)

Resolution: (Set this to 300, make sure ''pixels/inch'' is selected in the drop down box)

Ignore the other settings for now.

I suspect that the resolution was left as 72, which is for images to be viewed on screen, not at 300, which is best for images to be printed.

Finally, once you have your settings, click on the ''save preset . . . '' button (on the left of the ''New'' dialog box). This will save the settings for future use.

illustrator is FAR different than photoshop just so you know. photoshop is great for images, artwork, photos, things like that. illustrator is vector based, meaning its good for text and line art that can be made any size without losing resolution. depending on what you're going to be using it all for will make your decision. i'm a graphic designer so i use both all the time, usually i make my images in photoshop to the finally size i'll need it to be, then move it into illustrator to get crisper text or any other vector based designs i might want to put into it.

I have NO Photoshop program on my Mac right now and, if my sources are correct, CS2 is only an UPGRADE, meaning I supposedly need an older version of PS (is this correct?).

Are you trying to achieve a ''multiple exposure'' look? Where the subject moves, and you have two images of them?

Can be done in Photoshop, lots of ways. In the best case, you've got your camera locked down on a tripod-- so it doesn't move. You're going to have to select, copy and paste the subject in each frame down into one frame, as in the image that's linked here. No real ''trick'' to it-- just the sometimes tedious work of creating a selection (it helps a lot if your subject is contrasty to the background)

this is sometimes called a ''chronophotographic study'' and the technique was invented by Edward Muybridge.

The previous answer has it right. For me the video was hard to follow (and see, at my screen resolution). Here's some more details that might help.

Bigger round corners:

1. Make a new layer.

2. Choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool (press U).

3. Pick the icon you want in the upper toolbar: Shape Layers, Paths, or Fill Pixels.

4. Set the desired radius in the upper toolbar.

5. Mouse the size of rounded rectangle you want in your image.

Levels:

Layer/New Adjustment Layer/Levels/OK. Then move the middle slider in the Levels palette.

I use 5.0. I have never had that problem, so I don't have a great answer. I know that this is a brand new program, which means that you just installed it. Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it. It's a pain in the butt, I know, but if you ask Adobe for help, this is the first thing they will tell you so you may as well get it out of the way. If you still have trouble, go to http://www.adobe.com/support/ and ask for help. The knowledgebase has ten entries for trouble with text. It might also still be a P.E. vs. Vista problem, if you are running Vista.

If you can't find an answer here, they also have links for customer service on the first page.

Sometimes I have that problem if the project I want to print is still in Layers. Try saving it in layers as a Photoshop document, then try the command FLATTEN IMAGE (from the Image dropdown menu), then save as a jpeg.

Try printing the jpeg.

most likely you didn't rasterize. it's important to rasterize or else you won't be able to do anything with a text layer.

I just bought photoshop, and I want to use it to put together my own brochures, ads, flyers for my products. Every week I need to send proofs of my ads to the Newspaper (O.C. Register, L.A. Times)

The problem is...I don't know where to start! I took Photoshop class years ago in school, so I'm really rusty.

Each publication will have their own custom specs (technical specifications) for how each item should be set up... dimensions, resolution, contrast levels, etc. Also, some things will depend on if you are designing in color or black and white, and what kind of press technology they are using.

So truthfully, your best bet is to get the specifications from the publishers themselves. Frequently they'll provide this information on their websites.

For example, the L.A. Times has a Media Kit site. You click on the Ad Rates tab and then there are links to specs for print or online items.

Sorry, I don't know about HDR lenses.

But I think that Photoshop is now becoming necessary. People no longer want photographs with natural flaws, only newspapers want original pictures, but most buyers will like for a photograph that has a punch of interest and that can easily be done in Photoshop. It is true that if you have a great photograph then you might think that nothing else can be done to make it better but once you discover Photoshop and all the effects you can do you will always discover some effect that will make your photo just a little better. It also depends if you are freelance or working for a company. If you are freelance you probably just get away without using Photoshop but if you work for someone they might want you to retouch something about the picture with Photoshop.

That picture was done with Photoshop. You might be able to create something similar but not as powerful if you really look into the settings on your camera. Play around with the shutter, tonnes, and other features that your camera has built in.

I have downloaded a few custom brushes off of deviantART, but I'm clueless on how to add them to my brushes so that Photoshop can recognize them.

How do I add the brushes so that I can finally use them?

Are you sure those brushes are for Photoshop? Because I think .PspScript is a format for Paint Shop Pro scripts. No wait, I'm definitely sure that is a Paint Shop Pro format.

If you're looking for Photoshop brushes, make sure they're in .abr format.

As for installing these brushes, save the .abr files in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 7\Presets\Brushes folder. Then run Photoshop, select the brush tool, and in the brush settings toolbar click the small arrow and select 'Load Brush'.

1. Select the Shape Tool (e.g, Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle,Ellipse, etc.) you want from the Toolbox (right side, third from the bottom.)

2. In the Options Palette at the top of the screen, select the ''path'' option (it's the one in the middle, with a little pen superimposed over the box).

3. Click and drag to draw your shape.

4. Make sure the Paths palette is showing. The shape you just drew should be selected as the Work Path.

5. From the little pop-up menu to the right of the Paths palette, click ''Stroke Path...'' You have the choice of outlining your path in whatever brush is active, with the single-pixel pencil, or other options.

6. Once you have the result you like, you can delete the path to eliminate the annoying stripe down the middle of your shape.

Photoshop has a built in feature for this. Its called ''rounded rectangle'' althought the button may not be shown by default on the tool bar. You may need to click and drag the mouse to the right when you click on the ''rectangle tool''.
given that you are a noob, i wouldn't bother with shapes, you wont know how to manipulate them, etc. my suggestion is this: use the circular marque tool (under the selection tool, upper left hand corner of the toolbar) and draw your oval. then you can fill it or put a stroke (line) around it to make it to however your little heart desires.

the shape tool is good but it sounds more complicated than you need.
