Can anyone recommend photoshop type software?

I have a new Mustek Bearpaw 4800 scanner printer to scan slides but my old coral photohouse software isn't up to the job. Can anyone recommend good photoshop software suitable for Microsoft XP.

Photoshop is the best, and they have a lite version for much cheaper, can't remember exactly what it's called. Possibly Photoshop Elements?
I am not, in any way recommending illicit downloading of software, but I would point out that it is possible to get Photoshop through Torrent sites for people that are so inclined to do so.

I agree with the JASC Paintshop pro recommendations. It's cheap, effective and, I think, more flexible than Abobe Photoshop (but then I don't like Adobe software at all). Also, it doesn't use up half you PC's memory when it loads, like Photoshop does.
