When creating graphics, I mainly work on photoshop. I've been encountering a large group of people that mainly create their graphics on illustrator. Frankly, illustrator annoys me. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to learn it...Mainly, I'd like to know when it is appropriate to use Illustrator versus Photoshop and vice-versa. Thanks :)

Illustrator is better suited to drawings and graphics and PhotoShop is better for digitally altering photos and making photographic art.
That being said, I agree with you that Illustrator is annoying and difficult. If you get the effect you like from PhotoShop, stick with it :)

They are totally different programs.
Photoshop is raster based, while Illustrator is vector based.
Illustrator is better for high quality logos and text.
Photoshop is better for editing complex graphics, including adding complex effects etc.
